Print Design Brilliance: Illuminating Mixed Media Lamps

Final Jury and Project Display of Print Design-3 (4th Semester)
Product: Mixed Media Lamps with Print Design Principles.
Bachelors in Textile Design at Indus University in Karachi, Pakistan in 2017.

**Project Overview:**
In 2017, the students of Print Design-3 ventured into an exciting project under my mentorship. Their mission? To fuse print design principles with product development, crafting dynamic mixed media lamps. With bold designs and a precise 32cm Textile Rotary Repeat, they pushed the limits of traditional print design, infusing innovation into lamp creation.

**Conceptualization and Design Process:**
The project commenced with each student selecting a unique theme, followed by the creation of a mood board to visually articulate their concept's essence. This early stage of conceptualization was critical for setting a strong, coherent direction for their designs. A product board further refined these ideas, leading to the production of five preliminary sketches. From these sketches, one was chosen to be developed into the final design, with a focus on 32cm Rotary repeat size that would define the lamp's visual impact.
One main scale drawing was selected to lay the groundwork for the subsequent phases of sampling and colorway finalization.

**Technical Execution and Artistic Skill:**
The heart of the project lay in the hands-on development of the lamp, requiring students to employ various painting techniques and explore different surfaces. The emphasis on hand painting skills and detailed paper work was integral, with each student finalizing a colorway that would bring their vision to life. Upon approval of these samples, the real challenge began: translating the intricate design onto the actual lamp product. This phase not only tested their artistic abilities but also required collaboration with a carpenter for structural execution, embodying the interdisciplinary nature of this endeavor.

**Jury Evaluation and Educational Insights:**
Presented to an internal jury, the lamps were celebrated for their creativity and the depth of technical exploration. Despite the time constraints, which proved challenging for some, the project offered profound lessons in design execution, time management, and the creative process's iterative nature.
This endeavor underscored the synergy between traditional print design principles and modern product development, marking a significant learning journey for students and demonstrating the dynamic, interdisciplinary education at Indus University.
